Kayla Kreimann's freshman season started with a win over Upland on Aug. 13. It ended the same way on Wednesday night, with Alta Loma JV taking a 2–1 win at South Hills — and Kreimann in the libero jersey for the fourth time this fall.
The season line
Through 21 matches and 45 sets, Kreimann passed a 2.01 on 149 serves received — 73 perfect, 49 percent — with 65 percent of her passes keeping the Lions in system. She served 24 aces on 142 attempts with 89 percent in play, 0.53 aces per set. She recorded 79 digs without a single dig error and handled 45 out-of-system sets without a ball-handling error.
From right back to the libero jersey
She opened the fall as a right-back defensive specialist, passing from right, middle and left back as the rotation called for. As the season went on, the ball found her more and more: 72 serves came her way in her first 15 matches, about five a match. In her last six, 77 did — nearly 13 a match.
The libero jersey came in pieces. One set at the Santiago Tournament on Sept. 12: seven serves received at a 2.57, seven digs, no errors. Then four full matches to close the season. Her first three each topped the last — 2.00 at Colony on Sept. 23, 2.15 with nine perfect passes against South Hills on Sept. 29, and 2.25 with a season-high ten perfect passes on 16 attempts against Colony on Oct. 12. Across the four: 58 serves received, 31 passed perfect, a 2.03, and 26 digs.
The serve
The service line was a weapon all season. Seven aces on 15 serves against Los Altos. Four straight aces to open a match at Santiago. Twenty-four on the year, with nine of every ten serves in play.
Built for more
Her biggest workloads came at the end. She took a season-high 15 serves against Los Altos on Oct. 7 and passed them at a 2.13, then 16 against Colony five days later at a 2.25 — 18 perfect passes in two matches — and 16 more in the season-ending win. When the setter was pulled, she stepped in: 45 out-of-system sets on the year, none of them a ball-handling error.
