The Ball Keeps Finding No. 4 — and It Keeps Coming Back Up

One freshman season, start to finish: 149 serves received at a 2.01, 24 aces, 79 digs, and a move from right back into the libero jersey. A full-season profile of Alta Loma's Kayla Kreimann.

Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. · October 20, 2026

Watch Alta Loma's junior varsity long enough and your eye drifts to the back row, to the freshman wearing No. 4, and it stays there. Servers test her. Hitters swing at her seam. All season long, the ball kept finding her — and it kept coming back up.

Kayla Kreimann, a Class of 2030 libero and defensive specialist, finished her first high school season with a statistical file built across 21 matches and 45 sets. She passed a 2.01 on a 3.0 scale on 149 serves received, with 49 percent graded perfect and 65 percent keeping her setter in system. She served 24 aces with 89 percent of her serves in play, recorded 79 digs without a dig error, and handled 45 out-of-system sets without a ball-handling error.

From right back to the libero jersey

She opened the fall as a right-back defensive specialist, passing from right, middle and left back as the rotation called for — three zones, three angles to the setter, a different partner on each side. As the season went on, the ball found her more and more. In her first 15 matches, 72 serves came her way, about five a match. In her last six, 77 did — nearly 13 a match.

The libero jersey came in steps. At the Santiago Tournament on Sept. 12, she wore it for one set and passed a 2.57 on seven balls with seven digs and no errors. Then came four full matches at libero to close the season. Her first three each topped the last — 2.00 at Colony on Sept. 23, 2.15 with nine perfect passes against South Hills on Sept. 29, and 2.25 with a season-high ten perfect passes on 16 attempts against Colony on Oct. 12. Across the four: 58 serves received, 31 passed perfect, a 2.03, and 26 digs. The per-ball numbers held when the volume went up.

The pattern coaches will notice

The thing that stands out most is not a rating. It is a habit.

On Aug. 26, an opposing server found her three straight times with a hard float over her left shoulder. She passed the next six balls clean, four of them perfect. Her next match, she opened with an error on ball one and then put five perfect passes on seven attempts. In October, a week after a short night at San Dimas, she took a season-high 15 serves against Los Altos and passed them at a 2.13 — then took 16 against Colony five days later at a 2.25. Eighteen perfect passes in two matches.

Across her freshman season, she did not have two bad matches in a row.

A serve that decides sets

Her serve is the loudest part of a quiet game. Twenty-four aces in 45 sets — 0.53 per set — with nine of every ten serves in play. Against Los Altos, she served seven aces on 15 serves. Against Orange Vista at Santiago, she opened the match with four straight. When the Lions needed a point, No. 4 was a server they wanted at the line.

Wherever the team needs her

Ask around the Alta Loma bench and the word that comes up is available. She passed from every back-row spot. When the setter was pulled off the ball, she stepped in and delivered 45 out-of-system sets without an error. When the coaches handed her the libero jersey, she put it on and went to work; wherever the lineup card put her, she did the same.

For a program deciding who to invest in, that matters as much as any rating. Talent gets a player on the floor. The willingness to play anywhere, for anyone, keeps her there.

Season highs

What comes next

Every line in her file points the same direction: she passes at a steady standard from anywhere on the back row, she serves as a weapon, she does not give points away with careless errors, and when the volume went up late in the season, so did her best nights. Her club season begins this winter at libero, with more balls coming her way. Judging by her first season, she will take every one of them.
